Most ceramic tiles today are a little cheaper than porcelain tile. Ceramic tile is fine to install in any area of your home and you can save money on the tile and the thin-set that you use. Porcelain tile is more durable than ceramic and I find that it tends to be more square and true (all sides measure the same). What this means is you can usually have a smaller grout joint becuase the porcelain tile has a more perfect shape that ceramic (in most cases) less fighting with your tile to keep a nice uniform grout joint. However it is important to spread a think layer of thin-set on the back of porcelain ( called back buttering). This is done to insure proper bonding because porcelain is very dense and will not absorb the thin-set as well as ceramic tile will.
In closing, ceramic tile is fine to use, it is usually cheaper and faster to install. Porcelain tile is more money usually and a little more time consuming because you have to back butter each piece. Which ever you decide to go with, you will enjoy the beautiful new look of your bath, kitchen, or floor.
If you have any questions I did not address, then send them to info@tileright.com or go to TiLeRIGHT.com and look at our informative how to section that answers questions from layout to grout. The type of thin-set you should use depends on a few factors. If you are using ceramic tile, the less expensive thin-set is fine. If you are installing porcelain tile it is VERY important to use a polymer modified thin-set, it has a bonding agent that will bond to the dense porcelain. If you are on a budget the mid grade polymer modified thin-set will work just fine. If you are doing a small area or budget is not important to you as your piece of mind the best polymer modified thin-set, called a flex mortar will increase bond strenght and help with settlement cracks and tinting of your floor.
The color of your thin-set white or gray I choose this based on the grout color. If you have white grout or a light color then a white thin-set works best. It helps in case your thin-set bleeds through keep the color of your grout closer to what you picked for your tile. Use gray if you have gray grout or a dark color for the same reason mentioned above.

Laying tile on a diagonal (diamond pattern) will definitely make a small bathroom look bigger and more custom. Why it does this is because it plays tricks on the eyes, when you first walk into the bathroom you cannot count the tile from left to right. The diagonal layout also tends to make the tile itself seem larger. A lighter color of tile will help with this also. I do not recommend a bright white tile because it will look dirty all of the time, a light neutral color will look great and add character to your bath.
If you think installing a diagonal is more difficult you are wrong, it is just as easy as a straight lay if you have the right tools. Measuring the perimeter cuts can be difficult if yo do not use the MeasureRIGHT Pro tool from TiLeRIGHT.com . Save Time, Money, and Material by using the MeasureRIGHT Pro. Get a perfect measurement every time! No need to waste tile or make several attempts at cutting the tile correctly (measure once, cut once) it is just that easy.
If you have any questions I did not address then send them to info@tileright.com or go to the How-To page on TiLeRIGHT.com and look at the informative section from layout to grout. We also have an onsite master tile installer who has over twenty years of experience in the industry and would be happy to help out with any questions or concerns; (865)277-7528

The MeasureRIGHT Pro is proven time and time again that it is an tile tool that allows you to make precise cuts in just a few easy steps.
We received a phone call from a gentleman that purchased our tool that he intended on using for his bathroom installation. At the same time he had hired professionals to install a larger area of tile on a diagonal. The professionals had set the perimeter tile cuts and the homeowner was not satisfied with the cuts they had made. After they had gone home for the day he removed all the perimeter tile and made his own perimeter tile cuts using the MeasureRIGHT Pro and installed them himself. When the professionals returned the next morning they were surprised to see the new tiles and that the homeowner was able to make them on his own.
Looking to do your own tile installation then click below and purchase a tool you can only find on the internet. Make sure you have it on hand before you attempt to measure your first perimeter tile cut.

I found this review from a customer who purchased the MeasureRIGHT Pro
I purchased that tool and the tile puck, and being a first time tile installer I found them to be amazing. I laid 350 square feet of 12x12 porcelain on the diagonal. Not only were my cuts spot on but the letters helped me work around the door frames. I would highly recommend this product to anybody. Can you so the same with a spare tile, yes but being a first timer this dumbed it down for me lol and eased my install. I do not have any affiliation with the company but i do purchase things based in reviews. When I buy something that works I like to pass the word on. Here is a pic of my tile.

A rectified tile is defined as a tile that has gone through an additional step in the manufacturing process to ensure uniformity in size. (It has been cut after being fired at a very high temperature) A non-rectified tile does not undergo this process and slight variations in tile sizes may exist because each tile will shrink during the firing process as moisture escapes.
Now what does this mean to you?
There is a new trend gaining popularity where rectified tile is being installed edge to edge with very minimal grout lines. The look tends to make your space feel larger because there are no lines drawing the eye to each individual tile.
As long as you have the Right Tools and conditions you can Do-It-Yourself.
1. Most important is having a level floor.
Each tile has to lay flat in order for this installation to work and achieve the aesthetic look you want.
2. Tavy 2-Sided Tile Spacers in 1/32” (Yellow). These
are the smallest you can find anywhere and will help
keep your tiles evenly spaced. If you
want also have the 1/16” spacers (Green) for a slightly
larger grout joint.
3. The MeasureRIGHT Pro tile measuring gauge to install
precisely cut tiles. Working with such a small grout
joint means that there is little room for error when it
comes to your perimeter tile cuts. Make sure your cuts
are precise the first time.
4. The Tavy-Tile Puck is a lippage detector. Run this
level over your adjoining tiles to detect if one tile is
not level with the others. You don’t want to stub your
toe later on down the line to determine if one tile is not in
line with the rest.
Let TiLeRIGHT provide you with flooring tools to help you achieve your installation whether you’re a novice or a professional. We provide Free Shipping and in most cases will ship out your order the same day. |

Do you really need to remove the base moulding when installing tile? You do not under the right circumstances and with the MeasureRIGHT Pro Tile Flooring Tool. Professionally (and in new construction) it is customary to remove the base trim before a flooring installation. Not all installations require you to remove the base trim, which can be added costs and time to your remodel job. The MeasureRIGHT Pro tile measuring gauge is an exclusively patented tool that makes tile installation fast and easy. Make precise tile cuts the first time so you can install tile directly up to the base molding, no need to hide inaccurate cuts under the base. Take the time and watch the videos to see exactly how the tools can work for you. http://www.tileright.com/videos.asp |

One important thing to consider when choosing your tile design is your grout joint sizes. Obviously high traffic areas could benefit from grout joints that are smaller to virtually nonexistent; Tavy Two-Sided tile spacer in 1/32 inch (yellow spacers) are the smallest tile spacer you can buy and are typically used on natural stone, granite, and marble.
There are certain tiles and/or homeowners preference where you will have a grout joint that is larger. These grout joints commonly range from 1/8 of an inch to 3/8 of an inch and are accommodated by Tavy’s Line of 2 Sided Tile Spacers. Larger grout joints over time will become a shade darker because dirt and grime collect in the surface of the joint. It is to your advantage, especially with kids and pets, to seal the grout joints if you are installing or having tile installed by a professional. Grout sealers these days come in a variety of colors that can match virtually any grout color you choose. Sealing grout joints is an easy task that any homeowner could perform with a little bit of instruction.
Remember that the larger the grout joint size the more dirt and grime that are deposited on the joints; so make sure you seal those joints to help keep the color vibrant and not dingy. |

Choosing a tile pattern can be a daunting task. You have to take into consideration that the more complex designs take longer to install and may increase your budget due to added materials needed. The MeasureRIGHT Pro solves these issues by allowing you to accuratly measure and mark the sometimes complicated tile cuts you may encounter on your installation.
The purpose of a diagonal tile pattern is to draw your eye outwards to the points, making the space seem larger. This could be useful in a smaller space and the benefits of the design are worth the additional effort. In order to keep the room visually appealing and not to draw all your attention to the floors you should stick to neutral colors that are subtle but still interesting. Remember that tile is permanent and replacement is costly; so choose your tile and pattern accordingly, it will save you misery in the long run.
Now if you still are having trouble on choosing a design pattern for your tile installation then look for a little free help from a professional. Most of your local tile stores have a design desk or person on staff whose expertise is in tile design. Seek out their advice on how you should proceed and what patterns would look best in the space you have. |

So you have arrived at the point of your installation where you need to make tile cuts. Most likely you have reached the perimeter of your work area. This is the time that you do not want to make mistakes. Make sure to take your time when cutting tile and double check measurements at each step. Once a tile has been cut, there is no piecing it back together, so be sure it''s cut properly the first time.
There is a tool out there that can help you mark a tile to be cut so you only have to cut one time. The MeasureRIGHT Pro is a template that you can set and then use to mark all your perimeter tiles to be cut. Make
one trip to the wet saw or tile cutter…just remember to label the order
of your cuts so you can replace the tiles in the same order. You can purchase the tool directly from the inventor and watch the videos showing how easy it is to use the MeasureRIGHT Pro. Call (865)277-7528 and ask for Bret, our resident tile and marble installation specialist.

Installing ceramic tile is easy with modern fast-setting mastics, sealants, and grout. Whatever style or size you choose to install, the principles are the same.
Before you begin, you''ll need a hammer, chalk line, level, saber saw with carbide blade (helpful but not necessary), rubber gloves, tile mastic, tile grout sealer, tiles, edging cap and two outside corner edge caps for ceramic tile, and a paint stirring stick or old toothbrush to use for forcing grout deeply into the tile joints. You can also rent or buy a grooved trowel, tile nippers, tile cutter, and rubber squeegee. |
